Two Tales of Cities: Birmingham School of Acting's Summer Season

Tuesday, 1st June, 2010
Birmingham School of Acting (BSA), part of Birmingham City University, finishes its 2009/10 performances in June with two city-based plays, The Heiress and Vincent in Brixton. Both shows will be performed in Birmingham?s historic Old Rep Theatre.
Running from Wednesday 16 June until Saturday 19 June, The Heiress, by Ruth and Augustus Goetz, is set against the brownstones of 1880s New York. Based on Henry James? novel Washington Square, it charts the romance between young heiress Catherine and dashing Morris. The two plan to marry, but Catherine?s father is against the match, fearing Morris is only interested in Catherine?s fortune. Directed by Joss Bennathan, The Heiress reveals the age-old truth that marriage is never straightforward when money is involved.
The following week, Birmingham School of Acting returns to The Old Rep with Vincent in Brixton. Set in a Brixton boarding house, the play charts how the passion and rejection of a young foreigner become the making of the great artist, Vincent van Gogh. Using the real details of van Gogh?s early adulthood, Vincent in Brixton recounts his years as an art dealer in 1870s London ? a time of exploration and formation for the developing artist. Written by Nicholas Wright and directed by Jake Murray, Vincent in Brixton runs from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 June.
Both Summer Season shows are given by students on Birmingham School of Acting?s industry-accredited postgraduate acting course. Each offers the opportunity to see emerging professional actors who have trained in Birmingham, working under the direction of professional theatre directors.
Bookings for both plays can be made through Birmingham Box Office (Tel: +44 (0)121 303 2323 / www.birminghamboxoffice.com). Tickets cost £7, with a concessionary rate of £5 available to over-60s, unemployed people and individuals booking in a group of five or more. Student tickets cost £2.50.
