Birmingham?s UK City of Culture team made its final pitch to the judging panel in Liverpool on June 16 ? with a little help from people across the city.

In addition to the bid team, Birmingham performers, including street dancers and singers, took to the streets of Liverpool to showcase the city?s talents.

And people across Birmingham got in on the act by adding almost 1,000 comments and tweets to a live blog entitled ?In the Room? that was screened before the judging panel.

Leader of Birmingham City Council Mike Whitby, who led the Birmingham delegation, said: ?There is no doubt that the panel were very impressed with our bid. We showed that Birmingham is a city that celebrates its cultural diversity.

?This is the first year of the competition and we want to put on a show that will make that the people of Birmingham will be proud of.?
Commenting on the public response to ?In the Room?, Chairman of Birmingham Cultural Partnership Cllr Martin Mullaney added: ?A major strength of our bid from day one has been the high level of public engagement.

?Over 7,500 people logged onto our 24-hour Big Culture Blog in April, telling us about the wealth of cultural activities all over Birmingham. We wanted to replicate that for the judging panel and the response was phenomenal.

?This bid has come from the people of Birmingham and there is a real passion and desire to secure this title and make a real success of a year as the UK City of Culture.?
